We are developing best practice guidelines for compliance monitoring and enforcement under the RMA.
Consultation on the draft guidelines opened on 23 February 2018 and closed at 5pm on 6 April. The guidelines are now being revised to incorporate the feedback received. The final guidelines will be released on 9 July 2018.
Once finalised, the guidelines will assist councils with their compliance, monitoring and enforcement (CME) responsibilities.
They cover all CME activities including how to:
- strategically approach compliance
- carry out monitoring and investigations
- take enforcement actions.
They include examples of effective council practices, and standard tools and templates for CME staff to use.
The main audience for the guidelines is council CME staff, executive staff and elected representatives. They will also help the public and interest groups understand what their rights and obligations are.
