Willingness to pay for six end-of-life products

Publication date:  May 2014
Publication reference number:  CR 188

This report presents the findings of a 2013 study into whether and how much the public might be willing to pay for alternatives to disposing of products to landfill. NZIER reviewed local and international research for six products: e-waste, mercury-containing lamps and batteries, tyres, agricultural chemicals, and products containing refrigerant gases.

The review found only limited information that was useful for New Zealand circumstances and recommended more local research to better understand the issues. However, based on international experience it suggests there are advantages to imposing product stewardship responsibilities on producers as these internalise some of the costs and provide an incentive to reduce the cost of recycling.
