The Ministry for the Environment commissioned Graham Environmental Consulting Ltd to carry out an inventory of anthropogenic (human made) mercury sources and use in New Zealand. This was completed in 2012 as part of the national interest assessment for the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
New Zealand is a signatory to the Minamata Convention, which seeks to control the production and use of mercury due to its environmental and health risks.
The 2012 inventory has been developed using a new, internationally agreed methodology provided by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The new UNEP methodology differs significantly from that used for the 2008 inventory.
If you have any questions about the inventory, please contact the International Climate and Environment team by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
