This document provides guidance for planners and engineers on managing risks from liquefaction. It covers how to determine if liquefaction is an issue that needs to be managed, and appropriate land-use planning and building controls. 

The guidance responds to recommendations 186-189 of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Building Failure Caused by the Canterbury Earthquakes [Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment website].  

The guidance was prepared for the Ministry for the Environment and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment by experts with extensive Canterbury and national experience across the disciplines of geotechnical engineering, land-use planning and natural hazard risk management.
