Marine ecological risk assessment of the cumulative impact of electron rocket launches

Publication date:  August 2016
Publication reference number:  CR 233

The Ministry for the Environment commissioned the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research to assess the environmental risks to the Exclusive Economic Zone and continental shelf of threats arising from jettisoned material from space launch vehicles.

It considers different levels of launch activities from one launch to 10,000 launches, and assumes a worst case scenario where none of the jettisoned material burns up, but returns to Earth’s surface and lands in the EEZ.
