Modelling periphyton in New Zealand rivers: Part 1 An analysis of current data and development of national predictions

Publication date:  May 2019
Publication reference number:  CR 344

This report analyses environmental conditions that cause the growth of periphyton in streams and rivers. The aim was to assess the extent of nuisance periphyton across New Zealand.

Periphyton is the slime that grows on the bed of streams and rivers. It is a natural part of the food chain, but under certain conditions, periphyton can grow to excessive levels and become a nuisance for people as well as causing a decline in ecosystem health.
