About WELS

Under the Consumer Information Standards (Water Efficiency) Regulations 2017, New Zealand importers and manufacturers are responsible for ensuring products they import or manufacture are tested and meet the labelling requirements of this regulation. Retailers are responsible for ensuring WELS labels are displayed with these products at point of sale including online.

WELS labelling provides clear information to consumers on a product’s water efficiency and water consumption in a standardised form, to help them choose products that use less water to perform the desired function.
