The New Zealand Marine Environment Classification Overview

The Marine Environment Classification (MEC) provides a general map that shows the variation in both the physical and biological characteristics of New Zealand's marine area within our Exclusive Economic Zone. It has been developed as a partnership project between the Ministry and NIWA with the support of the Ministry of Fisheries (now the Ministry of Primary Industries) and the Department of Conservation.
