Deforestation mapping 2012: Final report

Publication date:  April 2014
Publication reference number:  CR 184

This report by Indufor Asia-Pacific describes the methodology used to complete deforestation mapping in New Zealand for the calendar years 2008 to 2012. It includes regional results and national statistics for the area of land deforested, harvested, or awaiting a land-use decision.

Mapping provided as part of this project has been incorporated into the Land Use Carbon Analysis System (LUCAS) 2012 land use map, along with other land-use change mapping undertaken by Landcare Research NZ Ltd.

Deforestation is an important land-use change activity for international greenhouse gas reporting under the United National Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol. Forest lost due to land-use change contributes emissions equivalent to the carbon stored in the forest before deforestation.
