Improving the quality of our air

Girl in New Zealand outdoors

When we are exposed to air polluted with fine particles it can affect our health. In Aotearoa New Zealand the burning of wood and coal for home heating is the main source of air pollution from fine particles.

The Government is seeking feedback on its proposed amendments to some provisions of the National Environmental Standards for Air Quality. The aim of the amendments is to better control the release of fine particles into our air.

The proposed amendments also include controls on mercury emissions. These would help us meet our obligations under the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

We invite you to have your say on the proposals.
