Funding for fresh water

Millions of dollars are being invested in improving water quality and management. This section has information about our fresh water funds and projects.

In this section

  • The Freshwater Improvement Fund commits $100 million over 10 years to improve the management of New Zealand’s lakes, rivers, streams, groundwater and wetlands. The fund is not currently accepting applications.
  • The Te Mana o Te Wai Fund provided funding for projects that support or enable iwi/hapū to improve the water quality of freshwater bodies, including lakes, rivers, streams, estuaries and lagoons. The fund is now closed for applicants.
  • An overview of the Rotorua Te Arawa Lakes Programme which is restoring the water quality of the Rotorua Lakes.
  • About the Lake Taupō Protection Project which is improving the lake’s water quality.
  • The Fresh Start for Fresh Water Clean-up Fund allocated $14.5 million from 2011 to 2014 to seven projects to restore waterways affected by historical pollution.
