About the proposed NES
In July 2019, Cabinet approved the final policy for the drafting of a national environmental standard (NES) for marine aquaculture. An NES is a regulation issued under the Resource Management Act. The proposed NES will go to Cabinet in early 2020 for a final decision on whether to make the regulation.

What is marine aquaculture?
Marine aquaculture involves the breeding, hatching, cultivating, rearing or ongrowing of fish, aquatic life, or seaweed for harvest where the farm is occupying the coastal marine area.
