This page outlines the intention of the proposed National Environmental Standard on Ecological Flows and Water Levels and where it is at.
Intention of the proposed NES
The proposed National Environmental Standard on Ecological Flows and Water Levels is to promote consistency in the way we decide whether the variability and quantity of water flowing in rivers, ground water systems, lakes and wetlands is sufficient.
It would do this by:
- setting interim limits on the alteration to flows and/or water levels where limits have not been imposed through regional plans or water conservation orders.
- providing a process for selecting the appropriate technical methods for evaluating the ecological component of environmental flows and water levels.
Where it is at
The Government is looking into whether to proceed with regulations related to flows and levels and will consult on any proposals in 2019.
