Key points raised at the Talk Environment Roadshow 2007 – discussions at the general tables
Every year the general tables on the Talk Environment Roadshow discuss a wide range of topics, from better urban design to waste packaging. This year was no different, and the issues that were frequently discussed throughout New Zealand have been listed below.
- Greater investment in alternative forms of transport is needed, with consideration given to the infrastructure needs of small and medium sized cities.
- Urgency and action is needed on climate change, especially in regards to water conservation. It needs to be easier to store rainwater.
- There needs to be greater encouragement of small scale wind farms.
- Increased interaction and consultation between local government, central government, iwi and the public is needed.
- A variety of media should be used to inform the public, as not everyone has internet access.
- Consumers need access to credible and clear information to research purchases so choices can be made on energy efficiency, low amounts of packaging and other environmental concerns
- Assistance should be targeted to low income households who cannot afford to remove wood burners, insulate or take other sustainable actions.
- Urban planning and design should take water resources into account. Development should be limited in areas where there is not a secure water supply to support it.
- Regions need help to develop sustainable urban design strategies which unite communities, prevent urban sprawl and share community resources.
- Recycling is not cost-effective for many regions.
- Recycling bins need to be visible in all public areas where there are rubbish bins, and tourist spots to encourage people to deal with waste responsibility.
- More information should be available on what to do with hazardous waste such as paint and e-waste.
- Many regions require an upgrade of their sewage treatment plants to cope with peak pressure. There needs to be greater monitoring of discharge, and where discharge is occurring at inappropriate sites this needs to be addressed.
- A packaging accord must be driven by legislation.
- Waste reduction programmes need more funding at a local level.
