This page explains how to make a nomination and how board members are selected and appointed.
The Minister for the Environment is not currently seeking nominations for Waste Advisory Board members.
Appointing the board
The Waste Advisory Board provides independent advice to the Minister for the Environment on matters relating to the Waste Minimisation Act 2008, and waste minimisation more generally.
The Minister is required to have at least four and no more than eight members appointed to the Waste Advisory Board. The board currently has seven members with the terms of two members expiring in August 2016. The Minister may therefore appoint up to three members following this nomination process.
In appointing board members, the Minister must consider the need for the board to have available from its members’ collective knowledge, skills and experience relating to:
- the Waste Minimisation Act 2008
- local government
- business/industry (including the commercial waste industry)
- community waste minimisation projects
- tikanga Māori.
A board member continues in office despite the expiry of their term of appointment until a successor is appointed, or the Minister gives written notice to the member that they are not to be to reappointed.

How board members are selected
All nominations, together with a suggested short-list and recommendations from the Ministry for the Environment, are provided to the Minister for the Environment for his consideration. After consulting the Minister of Māori Affairs, the Minister will take his own recommendations to the Appointments and Honours Committee of Cabinet. Cabinet makes the final appointment(s) decision.
Appointments to the board are notified in the New Zealand Gazette and on this website. All nominees and those who nominated them are informed of the outcome in writing.
Expected time commitment for board members
The Waste Advisory Board meets for a full day (usually in Wellington) around two to four times per year. Additionally, members need time to prepare for these meetings and prepare advice for the Minister.
Members’ remuneration is determined by the Cabinets Fees Framework for members appointed to bodies in which the Crown has an interest. Waste Advisory Board members are currently paid $510 per day before tax. Actual and reasonable expenses incurred (such as travel) are also reimbursed.
