In order to ensure a full and robust process of public consultation on the proposed national policy statement on renewable electricity generation, the Minister for the Environment has appointed an independent Board of Inquiry. The Board will hear public views via an open submission process, the Board will report back to the Environment Minister with recommendations on the proposed national policy statement.
The Board’s Chair is Dr Royden Somerville, QC, a Dunedin based barrister. The other Board members are Geraldine Baumann, Wira Gardiner and Dr Ralph Chapman. See biographical information on the board members.
The Board of Inquiry hearing commenced at 10:00 am on 27 April 2009 in Wellington.The hearings closed on Wednesday 26 August 2009.
Statements in response to questions directed by the Board of Inquiry to the Ministry for the Environment; Ministry of Economic Development; Electricity Commission; Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority; and Te Puni Kōkiri.

The Board publicly notified the proposed National Policy Statement on 6 September 2008. It has received in total 118 submissions and 25 further submissions.
