New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement

The New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement (NZCPS) is the only mandatory National Policy Statement required under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA).


The purpose of the NZCPS is to state policies to achieve the purpose of the RMA – to promote the sustainable management of natural and physical resources – in relation to the coastal environment of New Zealand.


The Minister of Conservation is responsible for preparing the NZCPS. To view the NZCPS and find out more information visit the Department of Conservation’s website.
