How does the Technical Working paper relate to the Discussion Documents?

The Technical Working Paper provides greater detail and evidence about the scale and magnitude of the potential problems set out in the Discussion Document. Your feedback on this paper is also welcome.

How do the two Technical Advisory Group reports relate to the Discussion Document?

In January 2010, the government announced the formation of two Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs) to review policy around urban planning and infrastructure.  The TAGs have produced reports of their findings, including 85 recommendations on improvements to deliver better urban environments and the infrastructure we need.  The TAG reports are published alongside the Discussion Document.  The options set out in the Discussion Document reflect the TAGs’ key recommendations.  They also include options where officials have identified further issues, and to address implementation and transition matters.

What is the nature of consultation that will be carried out to support the ongoing development of the options for the reform process?

The government is seeking formal feedback from the public on the Discussion Document through the submission process that closes on 17 December 2010. 

The Ministry for the Environment will also be holding invitation only regional events and hui throughout the country with local government, iwi and selected stakeholders. 

How will my feedback make a difference?

Government has not yet identified its preferred option or package of options from the range presented in the discussion document.  Your submissions will help inform final policy decisions.

What happens after the consultation period?

The submission process closes on 17 December 2010.  Submissions will be analysed in early 2011, followed by policy decisions for urban planning and infrastructure.  It is intended that legislation to give effect to these policy decisions will be introduced into the House of Representatives in 2011.
