This flow chart assists in determining a beach sanitary inspection category grading. The grading describes a susceptibility to faecal influence from very high to very good. The flow chart should be used after completing the catchment assessment checklist.
Firstly identify from the following, which is the single most significant source of faecal contamination:
- Effluent wastewater, stormwater (direct discharge to recreational water)
- River stream discharge
- No significant source
If the most significant source of faecal contamination at the beach was 1. Effluent, wastewater, stormwater, use the following table to further define the source and grade of the beach:

| d) | Urban stormwater not contaminated by sewage (CAC reference: 3, 8) | Moderate |
If the most significant source of faecal contamination at the beach was 2. River/stream discharge, use the following table to further define the source and grade of the beach:
