This flow chart assists in determining a beach sanitary inspection category grading. The grading describes a susceptibility to faecal influence from very high to very good. The flow chart should be used after completing the catchment assessment checklist.
Firstly identify from the following, which is the single most significant source of faecal contamination:
If the most significant source of faecal contamination at the beach was 1. Effluent, wastewater, stormwater, use the following table to further define the source and grade of the beach:
| Source of faecal contamination | Sanitary Inspection Category | |
|---|---|---|
| a) | Effluent, combined sewer discharges (CSO); sewer overflows and untreated/primary secondary treated discharge to beach or adjacent area or on site waste treatment systems (CAC reference: 1, 4, 5, 16) | Very high |
| b) | Effluent, wastewater, combined sewer discharges (CSO); sewer overflows and treated tertiary wastewater discharge to beach or adjacent area (CAC reference: 6, 17) | High |
| c) | Urban stormwater; marinas or moorings (boats); direct runoff from intensive agriculture (CAC reference: 2, 7, 9) | High |
| d) | Urban stormwater not contaminated by sewage (CAC reference: 3, 8) | Moderate |
If the most significant source of faecal contamination at the beach was 2. River/stream discharge, use the following table to further define the source and grade of the beach:
| Source of faecal contamination | Sanitary Inspection Category | |
|---|---|---|
| a) | Receives untreated primary and secondary wastewater treatment plant discharge; on-site waste treatment systems (CAC reference: 10) | High |
| b) | Receives tertiary treated discharge, combined sewer discharges (CSO), sewer overflows, intensive use in agricultural/rural catchment, significant feral bird/animal population (CAC reference: 11, 12, 13) | Moderate |
| c) | Runoff from low intensity agricultural/urban/rural catchment (CAC reference: 14) | Low |
| d) | Bush, forest, etc (CAC reference: 15) | Very low |
If there was 3. No significant source then the Sanitary Inspection Category for the beach is very low
