Textual description of figure

This diagram overlays the boundaries of the principal acts over the top of an illustration of the physical passage of water from the catchment (rivers, lakes and groundwater) to the treatment plant to the tap.

  • Human drinking water source (rivers, groundwater) is covered by the Resource Management Act 1991. Responsibility of Ministry for the Environment and regional councils. Tools are RMA tools and council officers.
  • Drinking water (treatment, supply) is covered by the Health (Drinking Water) Amendment Bill. Responsibility of Ministry of Health (MOH), health agencies, territorial authorities and water suppliers. Tools are MOH Drinking Water Standards, PHRMPs and drinking water assessors.
  • At the tap, water is covered by the Building Act. Tools are building inspectors.
