Important information for users deriving aquatic ecosystem trigger values for nitrate

This document investigates the basis of the nitrate trigger values and provides recalculated trigger values.
There has been some uncertainty associated with the nitrate trigger values as given in Table 3.4.1 of the ANZECC 2000 water quality guidelines. These trigger values indicate that for 95% protection the toxicity of nitrate is higher than for ammonia (a previously more toxic toxin) and markedly higher for 99% protection (by 19-times).
