Part Two: Taking Action

An overview of progress

This Part outlines progress in achieving more sustainable waste management in New Zealand since the last OECD Environmental Performance Review in 1996.

The primary focus of this Part is to summarise actions taken and significant achievements for each formal policy objective under the New Zealand Waste Strategy. A number of case studies are provided to illustrate the scope and nature of these achievements. Where actions taken contribute to more than one Waste Strategy objective, they are listed under each relevant objective.

Where appropriate, this discussion also takes account of waste management activities which were influenced by the earlier 1992 Waste Management Policy objectives.
