During the forthcoming years waste management costs will increase across New Zealand for a number of reasons including the need for increased environmental monitoring and the implementation of higher standards. It is also expected that The New Zealand Waste Strategy (2002) and Local Government Act 2002, will encourage those local authorities who rely predominantly on landfill disposal to establish more evolutionary waste management practices. More regionally oriented initiatives will be explored and individual waste stream components will be source separated, collected and beneficially reused or recycled, for example.
This project was commissioned by Wellington City Council (WCC), Ministry for the Environment (MfE) and Ministry of Economic Development (MoED). The objective of this investigation is to identify a range of issues relating to the long term nature, scale, viability and benefits to the Wellington region of post collection waste processing technologies for plastic, tyres and glass. In addition a methodology or template is required that would assist other regions to explore similar issues.
