Exploring the Built Environment - Your School

Learning objectives

Students will develop:

  • awareness of the issues that affect their school, and an understanding of potential solutions.

Process

  • As a class, identify issues the school faces or is likely to face in the future, for example waste management, traffic management, additional buildings/resources needed, the design of the school and school grounds, or an increasing or decreasing school roll.
  • Divide students into small groups and allocate one issue to each group.
  • Ask each group to develop a fact sheet on their issue. The fact sheet should:
    • outline why it is an issue
    • outline the causes of the issue
    • identify potential solutions
    • list what would need to be done to implement each potential solution, and any difficulties that would be likely to be encountered
    • identify a preferred solution.
  • Ask each group to explain their issue and suggested solution to the class.

Resources needed

You will need the following resources:

  • pens/pencils and paper.
