Purpose:

Purpose:

To provide a consistent framework for undertaking such work.

A compendium of urban design case studies (2004)

Purpose:

To demonstrate the practical application of the principles in the (draft) New Zealand Urban Design Protocol, as a web-based resource for practitioners and decision-makers throughout New Zealand and as a resource for a short CPD course in applied urban design, to be launched this year.

Title:

Upper Waitemata harbour development impacts study (2004)

Purpose:

Involves computer modelling of contaminant run-off from various urban land-use development scenarios and its impact on the ecology of the harbour. This information is being used in a decision support framework for developing a structure plan for the area.

Title:

Social Implications of Housing Intensification in the Auckland Region: Analysis and review of media reports, surveys and literature (February 2005)

Purpose:

To assess the perceived social impacts of intensification through analysis of local media coverage and resident surveys and to compare perceptions with international research literature to see if there was any support for the views expressed.

Comments:

At ARC there has also been a lot of work done on:

  • business land strategy (which is under development, but there have been several stages of research)
  • the Regional Open Space Strategy.

'Use of urban public space for physical and cultural re-creation'

Purpose:

To provide public health information on design of recreational areas that:

  • provide a safe and attractive place for use by diverse communities and by new groups such as women migrants
  • contribute to better cultural understanding among communities
  • ensure personal safety in public places
  • provide a place for women and their young children to exercise outdoors
  • provide opportunities for health messages such as injury prevention, the need for sun exposure to prevent nutritional disease, exercise to reduce obesity, and supporting physical activities.

'Active Friendly Environments: Physical Activity and the Built Environment'

Purpose:

To investigate the association between levels of physical activity, physical activity self-efficacy, and the built environment (actual and/or perceived). This will be achieved by linking physical activity sites or facilities with a North Shore population survey and facilities audit survey, through the use of geographical information systems.

Purpose:

(i) Examine different perceptions of physical activity, facilities to undertake physical activity and their relationships to the environment across key cultural communities and interest groups within North Shore City.

(ii) Identify any differential measures that are relevant to key cultural communities and/or interest groups within North Shore City.

Purpose:

(i) Determine catchment zones of the facility or open space users.

Title:

'Active Friendly Environments: North Shore City Residents Telephone Survey'

Purpose:

(i) Determine differences between facility accessibility, perceptions of the local environment, travel behaviours, and physical activity differences amongst diverse cultural and socio-economic groups within the North Shore.

(ii) Identify perceptual and objective differences between those who do and do not utilise their local environment for physical activity.

(iii) Compare self-report data with geographic information systems (GIS) to determine differences between perceived and objective environmental variables.

'Urban Design, Transport, and Physical Activity: Understanding Associations and Perceptions'

Purpose:

To investigate the role of urban design with transport-related physical activity (ie, walking or biking to local shops or occupation) using a SPARC dataset 'Obstacles to Action', and a North Shore randomised CATI sample. This is a three year study that will result in academic publications.
