Excellence in local government procurement

In May 2004 The Ministry for the Environment undertook a research survey on sustainable procurement in local government through the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives - Australia/New Zealand (ICLEI-A/NZ). The survey looked for examples of excellence in sustainable procurement in local government.

The survey also sought information on how the councils profiled in the case studies approached sustainable procurement and a range of useful policies and tools were collated. For more information, see Approaches to sustainable procurement.

A number of the case studies identified good sustainable procurement practice in the context of a strategic approach, but there were examples of good sustainable procurement projects in the absence of a strategy-led approach.

At the end of June 2004, representatives from the councils profiled in the case studies attended a workshop as part of the project. The workshop looked at the key factors that have resulted in their projects' success. For more information, see Local government sustainable procurement workshop.

This work provides a limited snapshot of the state of sustainable procurement in the local government sector in New Zealand. An opportunity now exists to build on the outcomes of this project by developing a strategic approach to accelerating the uptake of sustainable procurement by local government. The councils profiled in the case studies all indicate that they will continue to advance their work in this area and that they would like to continue the affiliations developed from this project. This work is being undertaken in association with Local Government New Zealand. For more information, contact:
