Project Background

New Zealand Post is actively involved in supporting the community through a range of activities, sponsorships and actions. That commitment includes reducing the company’s impact on the environment.

In 2004 to 2005, New Zealand Post achieved a 10 per cent reduction in energy consumption throughout its major sites through improved resource management. It is now a voluntary participant in the Govt3 programme run by the Ministry for the Environment to help agencies improve their overall sustainability.

The buildings were constructed with an underlying philosophy, design, construction and long-term operation incorporating sustainability. Consideration was given to the economic, social and environmental costs when purchasing the products and services needed to construct the new mail centres.

The appointment of architecture firm Warren and Mahoney, which operates under its own environmental protocol, and engineers Connell Mott McDonald meant the organisation could explore green building opportunities in partnership with experienced green building designers. They could apply green thinking to the design, construction and ongoing management of the mail centres.
