The decision to go green was clear when the New Zealand Post Group found itself in the unique position of requiring significant capital expenditure in its mail centre network at the time green building was coming on the horizon in New Zealand.

New Zealand Post had been a founding member of the EECA Energy Wise Companies Campaign in 1994 and actively involved in energy management since. Therefore, it was a natural and logical step to extend beyond energy management to green building. This also fits neatly within New Zealand Post’s overall corporate social responsibility strategic framework.

New Zealand Post considers its commitment to be sustainable over the long term as intrinsic to both its business strategy and its connection with New Zealanders. It received full endorsement from its board in providing green building features in its new mail centre buildings in Auckland, Waikato and Christchurch.

The organisation also wanted its staff members to take pride working in the suite of green buildings; something it believes will give it a strategic advantage in both staff attraction and retention.

The resulting Waikato Mail Centre provides a high level of sustainable design and integration between its architecture, structure and services. It aims to provide long-life, flexible, sustainable and user-friendly developments with an appropriate balance between capital investment and reduced operating costs.

The Centre provides for a working environment that has good air quality, thermal comfort, day lighting, good acoustics and outside awareness.
