NH₄-N concentrations were low in most rivers (2005 national median = 4 mg m^-3). Exceptions were sites on the lower reaches of Waingongoro, Manawatu, Waihou and Tarawera rivers. All but one of the rivers in the high percentile bands occur in the North Island. The Mataura River is the South Island river that ranks in the 80th-95th percentile band.
