The Southland Coastal Monitoring Programme contains the following components (Robertson, 1997):

- Pathogens in water, sediment and shellfish
- Coastal ecology
This document briefly reviews two components of the coastal monitoring programme and associated data sets:

| Methods used to measure parameters | Macroinvertebrates: 30 core samples are collected from each site and sieved
using a 1mm mesh. Animals are identified and counted. Same methodology as Auckland
Regional Council and Environment Bay of Plenty. Total organic carbon: standard lab methods. Grain size: removal organic matter with hydrogen peroxide; then wet and dry sieving |
