Keywords
Type1.
Type 11.
Coastal; estuarine; sediment
Coramandel Peninsula
Abstract This data set contains sediment characteristics for a number of sites in the Tairua and Whangapoua estuaries. The purpose of this data set is to monitor long-term trends in sediment characteristics in these estuaries.
Geographical Coverage Tairua and Whangapoua estuaries, eastern Coromandel.
Dataset start date. 1991-1992
Dataset end date. In progress
Status/currency. Current
Update frequency. It is intended that sites will be the sampled every 10-15 years.

Technical Evaluation

Parameters- what is measured Grain size
Parameters- what is calculated Mean grain size, sorting, principal mode, skewness etc.
Methods used to measure parameters Sediment samples are collected from survey transects with sampled site distances being measured from transect benchmarks. Subtidal samples are collected by scuba. Transect benchmarks are being surveyed as resources permit, to establish sample site co-ordinates within 5m and levels within 0.1m.

Sediment samples are washed and after the removal of the coarse shell fraction, sieved. Sediment size parameters are then calculated.

Scale of use. -
Number of records 120 samples Tairua; 140 samples Whangapoua.
GIS compatibility. Yes. As resources permit, the data is being entered into a GIS database to produce permit of various sediment size parameters for the two estuaries.
Available formats for users. Excel spreadsheets; graphs; tables
Access constraints. No restrictions
Measurement Accuracy To be completed by database manager.
Completeness of dataset To be completed by database manager.
Positional accuracy Each site located to within 5m.

Management Evaluation

Original purpose. To monitor the effect of land use activities on estuarine sediment properties.
