Management Evaluation

Original purpose. To track oil spills.
Relationships with classification systems. N/A
Relationships with other databases This database is complementary to regional council oil spill databases although the regional council databases can not be used directly with the MSA data.
Known relationships with proposed EPIP indicators. Confirmed stage 1 indicator:
"Confirmed marine oil spills by type, source and location".
Database uses? MSA - to report internally to the Maritime Safety Authority and the Minister of Transport
Public awareness of the database Moderate
Database strengths. Includes all marine oil spills (as defined in the abstract) since 1995.
Database limitations.
  • Queries beyond standard reporting requirements are difficult to address.
  • The database does not include non transport oil spills.
  • The database does not link directly with regional council oil spill datasets.

What are the Current and Emerging Uses of the Database for:

Assisting with determining historic state/baseline. Where records exist.
Assisting with determining current state/baseline. It does this.
Assisting with modeling possible future outcomes. This is an important part of planning to be prepared for oil spills.
Risk assessment. Risk assessment is an important part of oil spill prepartion.
Monitoring site selection and sample design. N/A
Aggregating and reporting data locally, regionally or nationally. Report nationally and regionally.
