Database Title

9.3 LINZ: Scientific data from nautical chart/bathymetry surveys

Keywords
Type1.
Type 11.
NZ EEZ; marine; bathymetry; sediment; currents; temperature;
Abstract This is the ancillary data collected on surveys used in the compilation of nautical/bathymetric charts. The parameters are measured at the time of survey and the information is stored as part of the survey report. More recent surveys collect more comprehensive data than that collected on earlier surveys.
Geographical Coverage Throughout the EEZ but not everywhere. All major shipping lanes.
Dataset start date. Generally 1970's, although temperature and salinity data was collected in the 1950's.
Dataset end date. Current
Status/currency. In progress
Update frequency. With each new survey
Maintenance. LINZ sets the standards for data collection

Technical Evaluation

Parameters- what is measured
  • Sediment composition
  • Temperature
  • Salinity
  • Turbidity
  • Current strength and direction
  • Tidal heights
Parameters- what is calculated N/A
Methods used to measure parameters
  • Sediment: now use multibeam echo sounder (future surveys to 2500m) which is callibrated using grab samples; (other methods eg. core samples were used in the past).
  • Current: now use a current meter for 30 days (other methods were used for earlier records).
  • Tides: 1-8 tidal stations per survey.
  • Turbidity: sechi disc.
Scale of use. Variable
Number of records Many
GIS compatibility. This could be possible for recent data which is for accurately located points.
Available formats for users. Stored as part of the survey report
Access constraints. Public information although the data is not readily accessible.
Measurement Accuracy To be completed by database manager.
Completeness of dataset To be completed by database manager.
Positional accuracy To be completed by database manager.

Management Evaluation

Original purpose. Part of the supporting data for nautical/bathymetric charts
Relationships with classification systems. N/A
Relationships with other databases Can be used with other datasets to assist with modelling. Part of information used in compiling nautical/bathymetric charts.
Known relationships with proposed EPIP indicators. Not known.
Database uses? Used when compiling LINZ bathymetric and nautical charts
Public awareness of the database Low
Database strengths. Recent surveys are accompanied by detailed supplementary information
Database limitations. Data is not readily accessible because it is a part of each survey report rather than collated in one central point.

What are the Current and Emerging Uses of the Database for:

Assisting with determining historic state/baseline. Historic data can be used for this purpose
Assisting with determining current state/baseline. Present day data can be used for this purpose
Assisting with modeling possible future outcomes. Some data may be able to be used possibly with other equivalent datasets to assist with modeling. Tidal data is used to verify tidal models.
Risk assessment. Sediment composition is used to give guidance on safe anchorages from a holding perspective.
Monitoring site selection and sample design. This would be possible in locations where there is adequate data.
Aggregating and reporting data locally, regionally or nationally. N/A
