Database Title

7.28 Ministry of Fisheries research tagging database ("tag")

Keywords
Type1.
Type 11.
New Zealand EEZ; marine; oceans; fisheries; biomass; growth rates.
Tagging; recapture.
Abstract This database is designed to handle tagging and release details for all tagging programmes. Tag recaptures have been obtained for 21 species, with 8 species (red rock lobster, snapper, kahawai, kingfish, hapuka, mako shark, scallop, and blue cod) accounting for 99% of all recaptures. Two of these species (lobster and snapper) account for 75% of recaptures.
Geographical Coverage New Zealand EEZ
Dataset start date. 1968
Dataset end date. Current
Status/currency. In progress
Update frequency. Annual
Maintenance. NIWA
Database size. 196,803 Kb

Technical Evaluation

Parameters- what is measured At the time of tagging:
  • Time and placement of tag
  • Size of fish.

At recapture:

  • Time
  • Place
  • Size
  • Who caught
  • How caught
Parameters- what is calculated
  • Biomass of fish stocks (% tagged fish relative to total catch)
  • Fish growth rates
Methods used to measure parameters Standard tagging methods.
The database is being updated to include old records.
Scale of use. Variable
Number of records Unknown
GIS compatibility. Not to date.
It is possible as latitude and longitude data is collected.
Available formats for users. Electronic relational database; requests are usually responded to with a flat file (Excel, ASCII).
Numerous reports that analyse the data
Access constraints. By request to Ministry of Fisheries. There is no cost for the data although there is a NIWA charge to extract data.
Measurement Accuracy To be completed by database manager.
Completeness of dataset To be completed by database manager.
Positional accuracy To be completed by database manager.

Management Evaluation

Original purpose. To improve fisheries management
Relationships with classification systems. N/A
Relationships with other databases Information from this database is used with other fisheries databases and physical databases to address various management and research questions.
Known relationships with proposed EPIP indicators. Not known.
Database uses? To estimate fish movement and therefore fish stock numbers.
To estimate fish growth rates.
Public awareness of the database Low
Database strengths. -
Database limitations. Not all tagging data in database

What are the Current and Emerging Uses of the Database for:

Assisting with determining historic state/baseline. The database may assist with this, especially when the older data is entered.
Assisting with determining current state/baseline. It does this for the parameters calculated.
Assisting with modeling possible future outcomes. The database is used to help develop models for the population trends and biomass of the main commercial species (e.g. orange roughy).
Risk assessment. The models are used to project likely future outcomes and risks under different senarios for the main commercial fish species.
Monitoring site selection and sample design. N/A
Aggregating and reporting data locally, regionally or nationally. N/A
