3.0 Background

The overall purpose of this review of marine databases is to assist the Ministry for the Environment with further developing and implementing confirmed Environmental Performance Indicator Programme indicators. This review is part of a wider project to review different ecological classification systems and databases used for environmental management and reporting. A similar review of databases for land, water and terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity is in Froude (1999).
