2.0 Introduction

The Ministry for the Environment commissioned this review of national databases relating to the New Zealand marine environment in May 2000. This review is closely associated with a parallel review of marine environment classification systems (Froude, 2000)

The term "marine environment" for the purposes of the Environmental Performance Indicators Programme includes the Exclusive Economic Zone as well as terrestrial and aquatic coastal environments.

The data in this report records the situation as at June 2000, except where individual record sheets have been updated. Where record sheets have been updated, a more recent date is recorded in "date metadata record prepared".
