Abstract This system was based on a review by Knox (1975) of New Zealand's benthic and shallow water faunas and recognised 6 provinces:
  • Kermadec (tropical/subtropical)
  • Aupourian (transitional warm temperate water from Northern New Zealand)
  • Cookian (cold temperate mixed water from central New Zealand)
  • Forsterian (transition between sub Antarctic cold temperate and the cold temperate mixed waters of southern South Island, Stewart and Snares Islands.
  • Moriorian (subtropical convergence surrounding the Chatham Islands)
  • Antipodean (sub Antarctic cold temperate waters surrounding the sub Antarctic islands).
