Abstract	This system was based on a review by Knox (1975) of New Zealand's benthic and shallow water faunas and recognised 6 provinces: Kermadec (tropical/subtropical) Aupourian (transitional warm temperate water from Northern New Zealand) Cookian (cold temperate mixed water from central New Zealand) Forsterian (transition between sub Antarctic cold temperate and the cold temperate mixed waters of southern South Island, Stewart and Snares Islands. Moriorian (subtropical convergence surrounding the Chatham Islands) Antipodean (sub Antarctic cold temperate waters surrounding the sub Antarctic islands).
