Abstract McClay developed a classification for organizing information on the status and origin of New Zealand estuarine systems. For the purpose of his project he defined "estuary" to include both estuarine and lagoonal environments. 301 estuaries were classified by:
  • area (hectares),
  • adjoining human population size
  • topography- classes used: bar-built, drowned river; lagoon, fiord
  • Degree of stratification-classes used: well mixed, slightly stratified, highly stratified, salt wedge
  • Pollution status-classes used: clean, slightly polluted, moderately polluted, grossly polluted.
Geographical coverage New Zealand mainland including Stewart Island, Campbell Island, Chatham Island
