3.0 Background - Reason for the Review

The overall purpose of this review of national databases relating to land, water and biodiversity is to assist the Ministry for Environment to develop and implement the confirmed Environmental Performance Indicator Programme indicators. This review is part of a wider project to review different ecological classification systems and databases used for environmental management and reporting.

Ecological classification systems and databases in the marine environment are addressed in Froude 2000(a) and 2000(b). Some of the databases addressed in this review of land, water and biodiversity databases and a parallel classification systems review (Froude & Beanland 1999) are also relevant to some aspects of the marine environment.
