| Methods used to measure parameters | The database has been compiled primarily by hand digitising from the Department's existing large-scale cadastral record maps. The database is added to on the daily basis. This will soon be replaced by a new system (Landonline) which will automatically check plans submitted by surveyors and amend the Digital Cadastral Database accordingly. The new system commenced in the Otago and Southland Land Districts early in 2000. |
| Secondary sources of data | N/A |
| Scale of use. | The scales of the maps which are digitised to provide the Digital Cadastral Database range from 1:396 to 1: 50,000. Scales of 1:792; 1:1000; 1:1584 and 1:2000 are predominant in urban areas. Scales of 1:7920 and 1:10,000 predominate in rural areas. |
| Number of records | Unknown |
| GIS compatibility. | This is a GIS database. A separate GIS exists for each land district plus the Chatham Islands. |
| Available formats for users. | DIGITAL-GINA format (ASCII based) |
| Access constraints. | A data license is required. A license from Statistics New Zealand is required for the mesh blocks data. |
| Measurement Accuracy | To be completed by database manager. |
| Completeness of dataset | Complete. Records all current land parcels as defined on approved Survey Office plans, Maori Land Court plans, and Deposited Plans, and diagrams on transfer, but not flats or units shown on Flat or Unit Plans. Specifications require that all parcels are recorded within 10 days of notification. |
| Positional accuracy | Pegged Survey Points: urban 1.5m, rural 10m, remote 50m. Points not pegged: urban 2m, rural 20m, remote 100m. |

| Original purpose. | To replace the public counter record sheet of property boundaries. |
| Relationships with classification systems. | N/A; |
| Relationships with other databases | The Digital Cadastral Database is used with many other databases (e.g. Land Cover Database) for a variety of purposes. |
| Known relationships with proposed EPIP indicators. | N/A |
| Who uses this database? | Key database clients are: central government, local government and public sector agencies using road centrelines or property based GIS applications for strategic purposes or as part of their business support (e.g. banks). There are a number of licensed distributors. |
| Public awareness of the database | There is a moderate level of awareness, especially among landowners. Surveyors are very familiar with the database. |
| Database strengths. |
|
| Database limitations. | The initial digitising perpetuated all the existing errors in the manual maps. |
