2.0 Introduction

The Ministry for the Environment commissioned this review of national databases relating to land, water, terrestrial biodiversity and freshwater biodiversity in late July 1999. This review is closely associated with a parallel review of classification systems, also for land, water, terrestrial biodiversity and freshwater biodiversity (Froude & Beanland, 1999).

The data in this report, records the situation as at September - October 1999. Several databases (eg. Bioweb, Land Cover Database) have been significantly updated. These databases are identified with a more recent "date metadata prepared entry".
