Keywords
Type1.
Type 11.
Vegetation, biological condition
Abstract This database documents (as at 1986) the coverage and diversity of permanent vegetation plots in New Zealand excluding those in databases administered by the then FRI and the Otago Regional Council. The database was compiled from voluntary responses to a questionnaire which was circulated individually and through the New Zealand Ecological Society and The New Zealand Botanical Society Newsletters in 1986. The database is not comprehensive but contains about 350 records ranging from the Three Kings Islands in the North to Antarctica in the South.

Management Evaluation

Original purpose. To provide a specific reference for all permanent plots outside of the larger databases administered by FRI and Otago Regional Council.
Relationships with classification systems. N/A
Relationships with other databases Some of the data may be in other data sets.
Known relationships with proposed EPIP indicators. N/A
Who uses this database? Department of Conservation. Researchers and land managers
Public awareness of the database Low
Database strengths. It identifies a number of small data sets that could easily be lost or forgotten.
Database limitations.
  • The database is not comprehensive.
  • The database is not up-to-date.

What are the Current and Emerging Uses of the Database for:

Assisting with determining historic state/baseline. It can assist with determining the historic state of some indigenous vegetation if the original datasets are consulted.
Assisting with determining current state/baseline. The information in the database of datasets is at least 10 years old. Some datasets may have a current record.
Assisting with modeling possible future outcomes. Not possible.
Risk assessment. Not possible for the database. Some individual datasets may identify areas at risk from loss / degradation.
Monitoring site selection and sample design. Not appropriate.
Aggregating and reporting data locally, regionally or nationally. Not appropriate.
