Abstract This database provides the names of plant taxa in the wild in New Zealand. It includes names for seed plants, mosses, liverworts and lichens and identifies the authorship of the taxa. The names are those currently accepted by the Landcare Research Herbarium.

This database is still being developed and a number of additional features are planned.

Management Evaluation

Original purpose. To provide an accessible source for verifying plant names.
Relationships with classification systems. Genera are classified into families according to Cronquist (1988) "The evolution and classification of flowering plants".
Relationships with other databases Contributes directly to the Department of Conservation BioWeb database
Known relationships with proposed EPIP indicators. Unknown
Who uses this database? Landcare Research
Department of Conservation
Researchers, scientists
Public awareness of the database Probably low. It is freely available on the Internet.
Database strengths. Provides an authoritative source for verifying the current names of plants found in the wild in New Zealand. This is especially important if there has been a number of taxonomic reviews or name changes for a taxon.
Database limitations.
  • It requires the correct spelling of the scientific name when searching. This can be difficult especially when a plant name has been changed several times.
  • It does not search on common names.
