Text description of figure

The regional economy consists of inputs from:

  • Agricultural land
  • Forest land
  • Degraded land
  • Energy land
  • Imports from other regions (which have agricultural, forest, degraded and energy land embodied in them)
  • Imports from other nations (which have agricultural, forest, degraded and energy land embodied in them)

and outputs of

  • Exports to other regions
  • Exports to other nations
  • Agricultural, forestry, fish, mining, manufacturing, services and other products to households within the region.

The ecological footprint is worked out by adding up the indirect inputs to households within the region from the regional economy:

  • Agricultural products
  • Forestry products
  • Fish
  • Mining products
  • Manufacturing products
  • Services products
  • Other

and then adding the direct inputs to households within the region

  • Imports from overseas
  • Direct land occupied by households
  • CO2 emissions
  • Imports from other regions.

The ecological balance of trade is worked out by adding up:

  • Exports from the regional economy to other regions
  • Exports from the regional economy to other nations

and then subtracting the total of:

  • Imports to the regional economy from other regions
  • Imports to the regional economy from other nations
  • Imports to households within the region from overseas
  • Imports to households within the region from other regions.
