Christchurch 2 case study

Case study: Community Renewal Programme

Christchurch City Council/Housing New Zealand

Community renewal programmes aim to revitalise disadvantaged communities and improve residents’quality of life.

The Aranui Community Renewal Programme is a collaborative programme by Christchurch City Council and Housing New Zealand. It involves working with stakeholders and the community to develop sustainable, good quality housing.

Aranui was chosen because:

  • residents need improved delivery of affordable housing
  • Housing New Zealand owns a lot of housing in Aranui, and the Council owns 24 pensioner units
  • a high level of ‘social dysfunction’ (gang violence, crime, and vandalism) has been identified in Aranui

The Council and Housing New Zealand developed a framework for the Programme’s development. This framework provides focus points for work over the next few years, and the Programme will evolve as stakeholders and the community increase their involvement. The focus points are to:

  • improve Aranui’s physical environment
  • encourage the community to take greater ownership of Aranui’s future
  • promote sustainability of housing
