Case study: Neighbourhood Improvement Plan

A Neighbourhood Improvement Plan is a coordinated approach to improving amenity in a specific area. The St Albans Neighbourhood Improvement Plan aims to ‘help retain and enhance the physical and social character of St Albans’.

Specific objectives of the Plan are to:

  • improve the appearance and character of the area by developing streets and open spaces
  • improve traffic safety, and pedestrian and landscape links between facilities
  • encourage good building and site design
  • provide a basis for publicly funded projects and community self help

Following consultation with people living in St Albans, council staff prepared a newsletter discussing the issues raised. The newsletter included a feedback form and was delivered to all householders in the area.

Staff then held an exhibition of the ideas developed from the feedback, and prepared a draft Neighbourhood Plan for comment. The final form of the Plan was a leaflet summarising the projects planned for the area in the next five years.
