Using indicator criteria

The indicator selection criteria (policy relevant, analytically valid, cost effective, and simple and easy to understand) are rigorous criteria developed by the Ministry for the Environment. Each criterion has associated questions for assessment.

Attributes and indicators

Waitakere District Council developed indicators by using the list of qualities to identify the attributes of urban amenity that people valued. Attributes are the raw material, or building blocks, of urban amenity. In the second stage of the process, the council used these attributes to develop the indicators to monitor urban amenity.

Rotorua District Council also used attributes to develop indicators for its monitoring strategy. As part of the process, the Council considered how to measure the indicators as well.
