Use the standard list of qualities to consult about urban amenity, or adapt the list as you wish. Each quality has associated concepts that make its meaning clear.
As a case study, Palmerston North City Council distributed an Amenity Values Survey to 53 people. A long-form survey containing more detail on each of the qualities was distributed to 10 people. The information was used to assess the District Plan, the Design Guidelines, and the CBD revitalisation strategy.

As a project trial, Palmerston North City Council held a series of focus group workshops to create an urban design strategy. Participants received a letter of invitation explaining the purpose of the workshops, and a background discussion paper containing the list of qualities.
At the workshops, participants were given a list of keywords under each of the qualities to act as prompts for discussion.

Rotorua District Council staff used the list of qualities to group and analyse the information they gained during participatory appraisal exercise, a hui, and a focus group workshop.
The Council also used the list of qualities as ‘desired outcomes’ when assessing the effectiveness of the District Plan.

Waimakariri District Council sent an informal three questions flier to residents in and around Rangiora. The questionnaire included some open questions about Rangiora’s character and future. This example shows that the three questions can be adapted as necessary.

Tasman District Council sent a satisfaction survey to households in Richmond and Mapua. The survey asked about people’s satisfaction with the rules in the Tasman Resource Management Plan, and about people’s satisfaction with general amenity in the two townships.
