Offshore Options: Managing Environmental Effects in New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone

June 2005, Ref. ME603

New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) holds a wealth of biodiversity and opportunities for economic enterprise. It also connects us to the rest of the world, via undersea telecommunication cables, ships and aircraft. This report outlines opportunities to improve the requirements in the management of the environmental impacts of activities in New Zealand's EEZ. It suggests that the government could negotiate voluntary agreements with industry in the short term because there are few activities currently underway in the EEZ. In the medium term, legislative change will be needed.
