Draft revised guideline
We recently consulted on updates to the Contaminated Land Management Guideline 1 and we have updated the draft guidelines based on the submissions received.
We have released the 2016 draft revised guideline (below) as it assists understanding of the proposed amendments to the National Environmental Standard for Assessing and Managing Contaminants in Soil to Protect Human Health (NESCS). There may be further minor changes to the guideline as a result of the consultation on the proposed amendments to the NESCS.
You can view the draft revised guideline via the following link:
- Contaminated Land Management Guideline No. 1: Reporting on Contaminated Sites in New Zealand (2016 revised draft)
The final revised guideline is planned to be gazetted in early 2017. Until then, the 2011 version of Contaminated Land Management Guideline 1 is the ‘current edition’ for NESCS purposes. We will provide for a transitional period before the new version of the guideline is gazetted to allow for investigations currently being undertaken.
This guideline has been developed through a partnership between the Ministry for the Environment, regional councils and unitary authorities to ensure consistency in the reporting on contaminated sites.
The guideline includes checklists for reporting requirements for contaminated sites and for the removal of petroleum underground storage tanks, which are available as separate documents.
Changes from the 2003 version
This guideline had minor updates in October 2011 including:
- updated website URLs
- updated references to other documents and government departments
- references to the Resource Management (National Environmental Standard for Assessing and Managing Contaminants in Soil to Protect Human Health) Regulations 2011 [New Zealand Legislation website].
